Holiday music is a popular chapter of the American Songbook. In fact many of the season’s most popular tunes were written by American songwriters and covered by the greatest singers of the day.
What would the holidays be without WINTER WONDERLAND, SILVER BELLS, SANTA CLAUS IS COMING TO TOWN, DO YOU HEAR WHAT I HEAR?, HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS, and, of course, JINGLE BELLS?
But I think for many, and certainly me, the quintessential American holiday song is THE CHRISTMAS SONG written by the wonderful Mel Torme. Just about everybody from the legendary Nat King Cole to Justin Bieber have sung this one. King Cole’s version is so right in the ear that it’s impossible to beat. But I’ve also long loved this jazzed up version by the queen of creamy vocals Ella Fitzgerald. If you’ve never heard it, I think you’ll enjoy it. This is classic American Songbook material at its best.
